Zaion
Unparalleled carbon material called “Zaion” will revolutionize your fishing.
“Zaion” is simply explained as a high density carbon resin. Traditionally Daiwa used magnesium to reduce the reels weight that was until Zaion was introduced in 2008 with the Luvias reels, since then it has spread across Daiwa’s range of spinning reels and in 2011 T3 is the first baitcaster to feature a Zaion body.
Zaion is a new material, composed of carbon resin and long carbon fibres. This high-density material is light, strong and resists corrosion, used in many of Daiwa’s reels, it far exceeds the strength of magnesium in strength per unit weight comparison. Zaion transmits vibration through the reel more efficiently than ever before and it is lighter and stronger than a conventional reel made with similar resins or graphite’s.
Many assume that “carbon material never surpasses the strength of metal no matter how good it is.” If carbon means ordinary carbon compound resin (CFPTR), it will surely not match magnesium in performance? But ZAION is the one and only material which should not be called normal carbon. Compared to normal carbon compound with 20% carbon fibre, ZAION has twice as much fibre, and even a hard steel edge cannot cut it. As a result, reels made of ZAION are more rigid than those made of magnesium with the same weight. Normal carbon compound material is fundamentally fragile because of its resin called nylon 6, and its rigidity is reduced by half if it absorbs water. Aromatic nylon used in ZAION is much harder than nylon 6 and does not absorb water, so ZAION does not lose its characteristics under watery conditions. No conventional carbon material, not even magnesium, can match ZAION in toughness and rigidity.
With ZAION exceeding magnesium in specific elastic modulus, this means that a reel made of ZAION is lighter than one made with magnesium which has been used for the highest class products. Although it is easy to make a lightweight reel using resin or carbon compound material, they lack toughness which is one of the essential elements of a reel. That is why magnesium, being light and strong, has been regarded as the best material for a reel. ZAION surpasses magnesium in lightness as well as matching it with rigidity, so it is ideal for a fishing reel.
It has also been one of the eternal challenges for reel manufacturers to prevent corrosion. Magnesium and aluminium are vulnerable to corrosion, whereas ZAION is made of a specific carbon compound that is extremely corrosion-resistant and will never rust even if it has
a scratch on its body and the base material is exposed. This characteristic contributes to not only to high rigidity but also long lasting durability.
